  • Comments : Mica background; published by The Commission of the Protection of Cultural Properties; carved by Maeda Kentaro and printed by Ono Gintaro; the Commission (which was part of the Ministry of Education designated woodblock printing as a mukei bunkazai (intangibe cultural asset) in 1952, recognizing traditional printing techniques and selected both Shinsui and Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) to produce commemorative prints; this is Shinsui's design and Hasui produced an oversized horizontal design Snow at Zozoji Temple

About The Artist

Shinsui, Ito, 1898-1972

Born in Tokyo. Original name Ito Hajime. Started working in drawing department of a Tokyo printing company at age 12; then studied with Kaburagi Kiyokata. Well known as Japanese-style painter; exhibited at Bunten, Teiten, and Nitten. Discovered by Watanabe Shozaburo in 1916; Watanabe and Shinsui collaborated for 25 years; Watanabe exported hundreds of Shinsui prints. Shinsui's landscape series Eight Views of Lake Biwa (Omi Hakkei), 1917-1918, inspired Kawase Hasui, another prolific collabor.....
