Usen, Ogawa, 1868-1938

Born in Edo. Given name was originally Taro; later changed to Mokichi; also referred to as Soju Usen. Studied Western-style painting with Honda Kinkichiro. Became manga artist and illustrator. Worked for Yomiuri shinbun and Heimin shinbun companies. Member Japan Fine Art Academy from 1917. Works include Three Idiots (Sangusha), an album of moku-hanga and haiga, published in 1912.** Taken in whole, or in part, with permission from: Merritt, Helen and Nanako .....
