Born in Edo. Given name was originally Taro; later changed to Mokichi; also referred to as Soju Usen. Studied Western-style painting with Honda Kinkichiro. Became manga artist and illustrator. Worked for Yomiuri shinbun and Heimin shinbun companies. Member Japan Fine Art Academy from 1917.
